October 15th is designated as Global Handwashing Day each year. The Global Handwashing Partnership chose the theme "Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene" for this year. Global Handwashing Day is an excellent time and "excuse" to spread information about proper hand washing and hygiene.
Handwashing is Important
Handwashing is a simple, safe, and inexpensive way to prevent the spread of disease. Studies have shown that handwashing with soap is effective at reducing diarrheal and respiratory diseases.
Inform People To Encourage Handwashing
If it is so important, why don't people wash their hands more often? There are many reasons... they are busy, they are running to catch the phone, they have to answer the door, they have to get back to their desks, they don't want to touch dirty sinks, it takes too long, they forget, etc. The bottom line is that there will always be people who don't wash their hands, but one way to encourage hand washing is by educating others about the benefits and importance of doing so.
Handwashing Tips
To wash your hands properly, you should wet them, apply soap, rub them together for about 20 seconds, rinse off the soap, and dry your hands.
Washing with soap and clean water is more effective than washing with water alone.
Hand sanitzers have not been proven to be more effective than washing with soap and water, but they are definitely a great alternative when soap and water are not available.
Spread The Word… Not Germs!
To raise awareness and encourage people to wash their hands properly, you could hang signage, talk about the day on social media, hand out and/or email fact sheets.
